For the first part of this exercise, i had to take photographs purposely lighter or dark than average |
I made this photograph lighter than average so the sky would appear more white than blue, i also wanted the background of the poster to be almost the same colour as the sky and almost blend in, making the photograph lighter than average allowed me to achieve this. |
In this photograph, i took a picture of a window with the curtains mostly closed from a shady room. I made this photograph darker than average to draw attention from the light coming through the curtains and the crack of light on to the cushion opposite, making the room appear a lot darker and thus a greater contrast between light and dark. I like the different colours the light appears in this photograph yellow through the curtains, with a yellowish glow around the window frame and white light coming from between the curtains and the door on the very edge of the frame. |

A photograph of a rocky desert landscape shot from above. I made this photograph darker than average to add ore shadow and texture to the rocks, also making the orange bolder and therefore stand out more. |
I made this photograph darker than average to silhouette fence however the sun was is the correct position to ensure the field in the background was still bright and of a decent/ average exposure. |
Another photograph made darker to create a silhouette. |
For the second part of this exercise, i had to take a series of photographs, each with 5 exposures arranged around what i measured as the best exposure.
Here a field with a goal post. The middle exposure was what my camera measured as the best exposure , going up / down one f/stop on each photograph either side, and so on. my favourite exposure would be one of the two darker ones, as the colours are a lot bolder and brighter. |
A shadow cast on a pavement. Again the middle picture measured as the best exposure. The darker exposures make the shadow stand out more, and a lot more visible, however it makes the photograph look quite harsh. I prefer the softer, lighter pictures on the other end of the scale. |
A dead tree trunk protruding from the bushes. I would agree with camera here, in that the middle exposure is the best. You can see the details in the trunk, and the bushes are a nice shade of green without the overall picture being too dark. |
A blue stairwell on a sunny day. The darker exposures here are a lot better, as there is less shine from the sun reflecting off the stairwell, and the blue is a nice deeper shade of blue. |
Shadows cast on a red fence. Only the last exposure is noticeably quite different, darker, than the rest. All exposures here i would say are good exposures. The colure are bright and bold in each photograph, and details, such as the shadows are all clear visible and bold in each photograph. |
The lighter the exposure here, the sunnier the picture appears to look, and the whiter the sky. The 3rd/ 4th exposures here are probably the best, the photographs, especially the 3rd are still fairly light in places, the tops of the grass, giving a sense of sunshine still, however the sky is a nice blue colour, instead of white. you can also see more details in each individual piece of grass. Although my personal favourite exposure is the last one, as i love the shade of blue of the sky. |
