Exercise: Light Through The Day

For this exercise, i had to take a series of photographs on a clear day of the same view every hour or so, for a whole day, to see how the light changed throughout the day.
This task turned out to be almost impossible, working 6 days a week i found it hard to find to spend such a large amount of time outside, and with the unpredictable british weather, finding a clear day where this was actually possible seemed a lot harder than i first imagined. However i managed to find a clear sunny day where i could venture out for whole day to carry out this task. I set out up the malvern hills, armed with a friend from company and a compass. I aimed to position myself in the direction the sun would set. Thinking this would give me the most dramatic changes in each photograph towards the end of the day. However this did not go as planned. I thought i was facing the right direction. That was until the sun began to set and i realised i was facing the opposite direction. I was unsure whether to give up and try another day or continue. But worried whether i'd get another opportunity. I decided to work with what i had. Albeit a little disappointed.

I picked this scene as it was fairly open. It had large hills in the foreground that could trap light and create shadows and in the background, fields of different colours. I thought i'd be able to see the effects the lighting had on the different colours.

I took my first photograph just before midday. This was the earliest i could get access to such a spot.
I then took a photograph every 45 minutes or so.

A very clear bright photograph, just before the sun was directly above. Not many shadows present here

Shadows are beginning to form on the left of the foreground, probably by the moving clouds.

More of the hill in the foreground is being covered by shadows. The yellow of the field on the very left is becoming more of a mustardy colour.

The shadows have moved to the right of the frame. The yellow fields in the background are an extremely bright yellow. The sun seems to be hitting the back of this image. However the yellow field on the very left i mentioned before, doesn't look very yellow at all anymore, more of a beige colour.

Foreground and the background seem to be covered by shade here.

Shadows slowly getting darker.
The sky is beginning to draw more of the eyes attention than the ground now.

The shadows have moved again, to each side of the frame in the background, The hills/ fields are starting to look more orangey now, perhaps because of the sun getting lower.

The foreground is almost a silhouette here. The background very bright and defined.

Most of the frame under shadows, not much is visible.

Orange tint again to the frame here caused by the sun. A lot less cloud coverage which might have been hiding this in previous pictures. Background is dull and shady

The background is being to turn slightly orange here. The yellows of the fields don't look as yellow, more sandy/ orange the green have also changed. This created by the low sun to the side of the camera.
