Exercise: Positioning a point

For this exercise i had to take three pictures of single points, and place them at different positions within the frame.

The point in this photograph is a small island within the background. The small island is slightly off center within this picture. I have placed the island here, as I wanted it to be the main center of focus, with the light subtly bursting out the sky around it, i wanted it to be the first thing you looked at. I think its positioning creates a somewhat diagonal line across the frame, giving it a greater level of depth.

The point within this photograph, the boat, is positioned towards the edge of the frame. I wanted the main focus within this picture to be the landscape, and i didn't want to draw attention away from this too much by placing a boat in the centre of the frame. The sand, sea, hills and sky are all quite thin horizontal strips across the picture, i tried to fit the boat in gently with this composition. Drawing your eye across the frame to the boat, flowing with the lines within the landscape. It also gives the photograph, i feel, a slightly greater sense of depth.

In this photograph, the main point, the telescope, is central, but in the bottom portion of the frame. The positioning of the telescope helps to split the photograph up.
